R&D focuses in particular on energy and environmental measures, but also involves the introduction of LEAN philosophy and tools for BIM. This includes the best practice programme «Standard Kruse Detaljer», where work is currently under way on dedicated development projects within flexible, interior wall solutions for housing, and ground concrete surfaces.

LEAN and BIM

LEAN Construction («inclusive planning») has been an important area for Kruse Smith. Two pilot projects, the Canal pier and Sogndalen community centre, have been completed, both with good results. LEAN is a working method that improves workflow during the execution phase. The principle of LEAN is that you obtain an overview of all the work processes at an early stage by involving all parties. A good total overview of the project facilitates sound operation. Through involvement in the research project «Inclusive planning» alongside the Norwegian company Veidekke, the research foundation Fafo, BI Norwegian Business School and the Universities of Agder and Oslo, Kruse Smith is also an active participant in the further development of LEAN tools.

Whereas Kruse Smith primarily uses LEAN as a tool for the execution phase, BIM is a tool for the planning phase. The work processes behind the models in BIM represent the biggest change from traditional planning. For BIM planning, we bring in consultants at an earlier stage than usual. This helps us to identify and prevent unfavourable solutions in the project as early as possible. Kruse Smith has made it a target to utilise BIM for planning of all projects where the company is responsible for the planning work.

In order to ensure consistent use of the optimal technical building solutions for the future, a project group has drawn up «Standard Kruse Detaljer», an accumulation of all our best practice experiences made accessible on the intranet.

R&D has also carried out and documented various test sites for surface treatment of visible concrete. Ground concrete floors and terraces are increasingly popular products. We have therefore conducted a number of trials, including the use of cast, ground, polished and surface-treated concrete surfaces, which also involved an evaluation of the long-term impact of the various surface treatments.
